Postcrossing: The Quaint Charm of Snail Mail

by Ivy Liu

In the age of the Internet, the humble postcard is surviving as a cherished relic.

If you ever find yourself peeking inside your mailbox, you may be delighted to find that there is a postcard from another part of the world addressed to none other than you. The surprise and _(1)_ that you may feel from getting real, intimate mail is something that has gotten lost in our digital age. Do not worry, _(2)_, for there is a project online called Postcrossing that will fill your lonely mailbox with surprises.
Postcrossing is _(3)_ "postcard" and "crossing" combined. You start by signing _(4)_ for free on its website with an address on hand. In order to get a postcard, you must send one out as well. At first, you can have up to five postcards _(5)_ all over the world at once to fellow members, or "postcrossers", who are all randomly selected. Eventually, as you send more, you can mail up to 100 postcards at a time. Exchanges only happen once between two people, unless they seek to _(6)_ further on their own.
Founded by Paulo Magalhães of Portugal in 2005, Postcrossing began as a hobby out of his own love for receiving _(7)_ postcards. In fact, he had no idea his little project would turn out so well. It seems like it appeared at the perfect time, because 489,000 people from 212 countries are now registered postcrossers. Its popularity reflects _(8)_ people feel about getting mail.
In the midst of global climate change, Postcrossing has made mindful _(9)_ to become a greener hobby. Its website provides tips given by members from their message boards to lessen its _(10)_ impact. Using recycled paper, writing during the day without the need for electric lighting, and walking or riding a bike to the post office are among a few of the ways to make Postcrossing fit for sustainability in the future.

(A) up (B) how (C) excitement (D) efforts (E) traveling
(F) simply (G) correspond (H) environmental (I) handwritten (J) though

  1. The surprise and excitement that you may feel from getting real, intimate mail is something that has gotten lost in our digital age.
    b. 選項中為名詞的有 (C) excitement(興奮)和 (D) efforts(努力),惟根據語意,(C) 項應為正選。
    c. excitement n.
Much to my excitement, my girlfriend accepted my proposal on the spot.
    *on the spot 當場;立刻
The excitements I experienced on my trip to Bangkok last week were unforgettable.
  2. Do not worry, though, for there is a project online called Postcrossing that will fill your lonely mailbox with surprises.
    c. though adv.
I like the hot springs on Yangming Mountain; they are too far to go to all the time, though.
  3. Postcrossing is simply "postcard" and "crossing" combined.
    c. simply adv.
Tyra Banks was the focus of the ceremony by simply dressing in white.
  4. You start by signing up for free on its website with an address on hand.
    sign up for…
Before logging in this website, you have to sign up for an account.
  5. At first, you can have up to five postcards traveling all over the world at once to fellow members, or "postcrossers", who are all randomly selected.
    have sb/sth V-ing
Mr. Chen had us laughing throughout the lecture.
  6. Exchanges only happen once between two people, unless they seek to correspond further on their own.
    c. correspond vi. 通信
    衍: correspond with… 與……通信
Andrew had corresponded with Emma for 20 years before they finally met.
  7. Founded by Paulo Magalhães of Portugal in 2005, Postcrossing began as a hobby out of his own love for receiving handwritten postcards.
    b. 選項中為形容詞的有(H) environmental(環境的)和 (I) handwritten(手寫的),惟根據語意, (I) 項應為正選。
    c. handwritten a.
Please note that letters of application for any vacancy must be handwritten.
  8. Its popularity reflects how people feel about getting mail.
I know how we should handle the problem.
  9. In the midst of global climate change, Postcrossing has made mindful efforts to become a greener hobby.
    a. 空格前有形容詞 mindful(用心的),得知空格應置名詞。
    c. effort n. 努力
    衍: make every effort to V 盡全力(做)???
John makes every effort to please his girlfriend on each Valentine’s Day.
